Welcome to Evan Davis Jazz!
15 years since I’ve been in Vegas. 14 years since I’ve been doing my web site, emails, and calendar of local events. 8 years and 10 months since I’ve been with The Vegas Voice writing entertainment articles, producing their shows, and hosting dozens of variety shows at over a dozen properties. A new chapter of my life is starting once again, as I will be moving out of town.
Now I will be moving out of town, but the Evan Davis Jazz Calendar and emails will continue to update you weekly. In our 15 years in Vegas, we’ve moved 7 times. Renting homes, owning homes, country club living, high rise living on the Strip and we have pretty much seen and done it all. Just like Vegas reinvents itself almost daily, I’ve grown and changed in my 15 Vegas years. Each step I’ve taken has allowed me to look back and say, “I’ve Got Nothing To Regret”. I’ve met some wonderful and talented people, some performers and many who appreciate music. Some were truly friends and some just, well you know, liked you for what you could do for them. I don’t think there is a local club in town that I couldn’t walk into without knowing someone. Exiting a room always took 20 minutes as I said my good nights to friends and acquaintances. For someone who couldn’t sing, dance, or tell jokes, I felt comfortable and at home, especially on stage with a mic in my hand. Now it’s time to make a new home and be closer to family. A big part of our family here in Vegas was The Vegas Voice. They gave me the opportunity to be creative with producing shows while I tried to expose as many performers as possible to the local fan base of Vegas. One of my first shows, which I will never forget, was at the Silverton with a packed house of over 700. I co-hosted with Bob Anderson and included about two dozen of Vegas’ best, but when Clint Holmes and Frankie Scinta joined the stage with Bob, well I didn’t think it could get any better. Years later I still got that same thrill with a crowd of 90. The Vegas Voice is a magazine that covers all aspects of life for the active adult community. Entertainment was new to them, and they allowed me to run with it, and I did. From writing about it, to producing shows, to Celebrity Corner interviews and finally podcasts. We ran the whole spectrum. I forgot to mention that this all started with a one-time friend introducing me to many performers. The Vegas Voice opportunity happened with a vision of my now friend and confidant, Sam Wagmeister, who said, “hey let’s bring Evan aboard and bring entertainment to our magazine and focus it around Evan’s blog and calendar of events”. From the very first gigs I put together at the Mediterranean Grill, The Mad Greek and Blue Fire, all pre-Vegas Voice, to my last gig at MacDonald Ranch, it’s been a blast. Thank you Vegas Voice family Dan, Rana, Ray, Bill, Jonny, Anna and Sam. You guys are the best! * Due to occasional schedule changes and cancellations, it is advised to call before going. |

I WAS THINKING about doing a year in review, but I barely remember what I did last weekend. I will however tell you about some of my choice eateries. Italian being my favorite goes to Mastrioni’s on Hualapai. There are at least half dozen more that I enjoy but won’t mention them all. Looking for Thai? Lotus of Siam is the only place to go. World renowned, Lotus of Siam is tucked away in a not so desirable location, but well worth the trip to the east side of town on Sahara. Staying with the oriental theme, New York Chinese Restaurant is my choice for Chinese take out. With a few tables and two locations, take out is really all you can do. Dim Sum is another story. The Cathay House on Spring Mountain will treat you to a plethora of small dishes of various delicacies. A trained palate is definitely needed. How about some Greek food? The Mad Greek Café at Durango and Sahara is my first choice, and then again I haven’t been to many Greek restaurants in town. McMullen’sfor Irish, Famous Dave’s for ribs and burgers and of course, In and Out for the fast food burger. A small hole in the wall on Fremont Street East, Mamita’s was my choice for Cuban. Since finding out the health department had shut them down for a while, I will be looking for a new Cubano restaruant. Being not much of a Mexican fan, I can’t decipher one from another. Tapas however is another story. FireFly on paradise has a great vibe and intriguing menu. Bagelmania, my preference for breakfast, mainly because of their bagels. Scooped and toasted of course. But from a deli standpoint, I haven’t found one that I really look forward to for that pastrami or corn beef sandwich. Lots of steak houses in town but I haven’t eaten at all of them. Vic and Anthony’s is at the top my list. This is probably why I need to start dieting again.
LET’S LOOK AT music venues and places to hang out. Afternoon Jazz at E-String brings great big bands on weekends. After football season they will probably start Monday nights again. A little bar and gaming place that’s been around for over 35 years called the Dispensary Lounge, puts together a late night jazz scene on Friday and Saturday nights. Not much on the west side of town but I’m working on that. Some Blues at the Sand Dollar and other clubs around town. Alexis Park for a mix of R&B and Old School Dance. Open Mic’s on Mondays at Bootlegger and the Tap House. Hang out at Piero’s, The Lady Silvia and Salvatore’s piano bar. Other cool bar hangs would be Brio, Blue Fire and possible Kelly’s Steak House, just recently opened.
I don’t want you to think all I do is go out and eat and drink…what the Hell, life is too short, and much of it is lost by waiting! Certainly don’t let anyone tell you how to live yours!
